Key Bridge has reopened

January 8, 2013

The Key Bridge is open again.

The bridge and all nearby street closures were reopened about 7:45 p.m., D.C. police said on Twitter. Around 7:30, police said they had taken into custody a person, who possibly had threatened to jump from the bridge.

Police reported that a call came in at 4:42 p.m. from someone who spotted a man on the outside of the bridge rail. As of 5:30 p.m., the Whitehurst Freeway as well as 27th and K streets NW were also shut down. Commuters were being diverted from eastbound M Street to Pennsylvania Avenue and from westbound M Street to Canal Road, which created massive headaches on M Street.

Traffic was snarled on both sides of the bridge, with major delays reported in arteries across Georgetown and Rosslyn.
