The Weekend and Beyond: Snow, Metro work and more

January 25, 2013

The presidential inauguration has come and gone, and with it all of the tourists and related street closures that make inauguration weekend such a tricky time for getting around the Washington area.

This weekend is something of a return to basics. We have snow (which could affect the Friday evening commute), a march in the District (which is closing multiple streets) and Metro track work (which signals, as much as anything, a return to normalcy).

Here’s what you need to know for traveling this weekend:

A snowy (and slow) commute home on Friday

The most pressing and immediate concern: Snow and the Friday evening commute. The Capital Weather Gang forecast calls for snow this afternoon and into the evening, which could create heavy delays across the region.

The game plan remains the same: Use caution, leave yourself plenty of time and expect delays.

We’ll have live coverage of any traffic impact here on Dr. Gridlock. For the latest on the weather, check with the Capital Weather Gang.

March for Life street closures

The March for Life is shutting down several streets in the District throughout the day and into the early evening. Head here for a complete list.

Metro work on the Red, Orange and Green lines

The good news for Red Line riders: Metro wound up nixing major work that would have shut down multiple downtown stations (including Farragut North, Metro Center, Gallery Place, Judiciary Square, Union Station and NoMa Gallaudet U).

The bad news: There’s still going to be single-tracking and other work on the Red Line, in addition to similar situations on the Orange and Green Lines.

Red Line: From Friday at 10 p.m. through Sunday at noon, trains will share a track between Farragut North and Judiciary Square. They will operate between the ends of the line at Shady Grove and Glenmont about every 20 minutes.

Between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. and noon Sunday, more trains will be operating between Shady Grove and Farragut North, so in that zone, trains should reach platforms about every 10 minutes. Add at least 10 minutes of extra travel time because of the work zone, the transit authority said.

The Red Line work should be finished by noon on Sunday, which leaves extra time before the Washington Capitals host the Buffalo Sabres at the Verizon Center (scheduled for Sunday at 3 p.m.).

Orange Line: From Friday at 10 p.m. through the system’s closure on Sunday, trains will share a track in two segments: between East Falls Church and West Falls Church and between Stadium-Armory and Cheverly. Throughout the weekend, trains will operate about every 24 minutes so add at least 20 minutes to normal travel time.

Green Line: From Friday at 10 p.m. through the system’s closure on Sunday, trains will share a track between College Park and Greenbelt. The trains will operate on their regular weekend schedule, but during the daytime, every other train will begin or end its run at College Park, rather than Greenbelt. Add at least 10 minutes to normal travel time.

Detours, construction at Route 50 interchange near Clarendon

Construction continues around the spot near Clarendon where Route 50 (Arlington Boulevard), Courthouse Road and 10th Street meet.

This weekend, crews will demolish the Courthouse Road bridge, which will necessitate a detour from Saturday at 8 a.m. until Sunday at 8 p.m. After that, the bridge will reopen, but detours will remain in place until August.

Head to this post for maps showing the detour that will be in place this weekend and the one that will remain through August.

New York Avenue detour on Monday

The New York Avenue bridge rehabilitation project will create detours and single-lane conditions on Monday, Jan. 28. Westbound New York Avenue will be closed between Penn Street and Florida Avenue from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and again from 7:30 p.m. to 4 a.m. early Tuesday morning.

Westbound traffic will be pivoted at Penn Street to 6th Street and Florida Avenue before being allowed back onto New York Avenue. Expect delays.

Southwest Freeway/I-395 single lane conditions

The District Department of Transportation will again limit both directions of the Southwest Freeway/I-395 to a single lane between 9th and 12th streets overnight tonight. In addition, the ramp from the southbound Southwest Freeway/I-395 to Maine Avenue SW will be limited to a single lane.

This situation, which was already in place from Thursday at 10 p.m. until Friday at 5 a.m., will resume again from Friday at 10 p.m. until Saturday at 5 a.m.

The lane closures are to allow crews to prepare for upcoming work on the L’Enfant Promenade Bridge.

I-95 South construction

Work on southbound I-95 between Sandy Spring Road and the Intercounty Connector will limit lanes overnight from Sunday through Thursday, including some periods when all southbound lanes will be closed.

The work is scheduled from Sunday through Thursday, according to the Maryland State Highway Administration. At 7 p.m., a single lane will close. At 11 p.m., two lanes will close. At midnight, three lanes will close. And between midnight and 4 a.m., there will be one or two complete stoppages taking up to 30 minutes. In addition, ramps from Sandy Spring Road to I-95 may be closed during these temporary stoppages.

All travel lanes should be reopened by 5 a.m. the following mornings.

Plug Alert: Going Out Guide

Looking for something to do? The Going Out Guide rounds up some of the best events around town. One event in particular — Nats Fest at the Washington Convention Center — could lead to heavy traffic on Saturday afternoon.
