The weekend’s “flaky pattern” will continue through Tuesday, the Capital Weather Gang says. Temperatures will become milder, but clouds will remain through the work week.
There’s a Wizards or a Capitals game at Verizon Center every weeknight except Thursday, and the fans should pay special attention to Metro’s late-night track work schedule. Much of the road work is done overnights, but note the projects at the Arlington Boulevard interchange, Route 7 in Tysons and on Rock Creek Parkway.
The other set of three will remain open during the project, as will the elevator. All the work is scheduled to be done this fall.
The project is similar to the replacements that occurred at the Foggy Bottom and Dupont Circle stations. It’s more than the familiar tear up during one of the escalator modernization projects. Workers must haul out the old structures and bring in new ones.
The escalators to be replaced are 18-years-old and break down a lot. The manufacturer stopped making escalators and parts several years ago. Systemwide, the transit authority is moving away from its losing battle with fixing the old machinery and toward replacement projects.
Metro weeknight track work
Weeknight maintenance is scheduled on all five Metrorail lines through Thursday.
Red Line: After 8 p.m., riders are likely to encounter delays of about 10 minutes between Dupont Circle and Van Ness, the transit authority said. After 10 p.m., expect delays of about 10 minutes between Rhode Island Avenue and Takoma.
Blue Line: After 8 p.m., expect delays of about 15 minutes between Stadium-Armory and Morgan Boulevard.
Orange Line: After 10 p.m., expect delays of about five minutes between East Falls Church and West Falls Church.
Green and Yellow lines: After 10 p.m., expect delays of about five minutes between Mount Vernon Square and L’Enfant Plaza.
Arlington Boulevard interchange
The Virginia Department of Transportation will be closing lanes on Arlington Boulevard (Route 50) from 10th Street to North Rhodes Street in the Rosslyn area as a part of the Interchange reconstruction project scheduled to be done next year.
Monday through Friday, the closings will occur on the westbound side from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on the eastbound side from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The ramp from 10th Street to westbound Arlington Boulevard is closed for about the next two months. Follow the detour down Washington Boulevard to North Pershing Drive to reach westbound Arlington Boulevard.
The westbound exit from the boulevard to 10th Street, closed in October, won’t reopen till the spring. Follow the detour from westbound Arlington Boulevard to North Pershing Drive and Washington Boulevard to reach 10th Street.
New Loudoun Park & Ride lot
The Loudoun County Tysons Express bus service will open a new park and ride lot in Ashburn on Monday. It’s in Goose Creek Village, 21001 Sycolin Rd., at the intersection with Belmont Ridge Road.
The express bus will provide morning and afternoon service to and from Tysons. A shuttle also will provide morning and afternoon service to East Tysons, stopping at MITRE, Capital One, Northrop Grumman, and East Tysons employers.
I-95 North near Intercounty Connector
Watch for lane closings Sunday through Thursday nights on northbound Interstate 95 between Sandy Spring Road and the Intercounty Connector, the area where a new interchange is under construction.
A single lane is scheduled to close at 7 p.m. each night. Then two lanes are to be closed by 11 p.m. (I’ve seen that start earlier.) By midnight, three lanes will be closed. Between midnight and 4 a.m., all northbound lanes may be closed for a half-hour. The ramps from Sandy Spring Road to I-95 also may close during the full shutdowns. All lanes are scheduled to be open by 5 o’clock each morning.
Route 7 lane shift Tysons Corner
Eastbound Route 7 between Gosnell Road and Marshalls Drive is being shifted into a temporary configuration about 36 feet to the north, the Dulles Metrorail project says. Crews will be working on this overnights Monday through Saturday. Watch for double lane closings in the area from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights, from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Friday night and from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. overnight Saturday.
I-95 express lanes project
Pile driving for the 95 Express Lanes project is scheduled to continue into late February. Watch for construction activity on Russell Road near Quantico. This work, to support the foundations of the new express lanes bridge that will run above Russell Road in the median of Interstate 95, will occur Mondays through Saturdays between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Drivers will encounter lane closings on Russell Road during the work. Add extra travel time when using Russell Road at I-95.
Rock Creek Parkway
Work on the parkway continues at Waterside Drive, between P Street and Beach Drive. The southbound right curb lane is closed approaching Waterside Drive. The lane pattern is adjusted during rush hours. Drivers take over one northbound lane to go south during morning rush hour until 9:10 a.m. A minimum of one lane will remain open southbound at all times.
SE Freeway closings
The District Department of Transportation has taken the next step in rebuilding part of the Southeast Freeway by closing the eastbound lanes between Eighth Street SE and Pennsylvania Avenue. Late last year, the westbound lanes were closed.
This portion of the freeway on the south side of Capitol Hill is being raised up and rebuilt into a boulevard, with better connections to the adjacent neighborhood. Barney Circle, on the east end of the project, eventually will be rebuilt into a real traffic circle.
Meanwhile, the freeway section will be closed for about a year and a half. Eastbound freeway traffic heading toward I-295/DC 295 or Pennsylvania Avenue SE should continue across the 11th Street Bridge over the Anacostia River.
Fairfax bus service meetings
The Fairfax County Department of Transportation has begun public meetings to discuss proposed bus links with the Silver Line. These are the remaining meetings, all of which are scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.:
