The week ahead: Metro late-night work, lane closings in D.C. region

Not a bad week for travelers in the D.C. area, with limited work schedules on the roads and rails. The Capital Weather Gang says the warmest day of the week probably will be Wednesday, the wettest Tuesday. The coldest days are likely to be Friday to Sunday.

On Sunday’s Commuter page, I looked at the ways researchers measure traffic flow to determine our congestion is some of the worst in the nation, but that’s a very broad measure that doesn’t reflect the variety of ways people get to and from work in this region. It doesn’t account for disruptions caused when someone drives off the Memorial Bridge, or the traffic and transit impact when the Capitals have a game at Verizon Center in downtown D.C. on Tuesday night, or the Wizards are home Wednesday and Friday.

So check the blog during the week for developments. Join me at noon Monday for an online discussion of all our local transportation issues. We might talk about the potential impact of Virginia’s approval of more spending on transportation, or D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray’s new sustainability program, or Metro’s proposals for the next couple of decades.

Meanwhile, here are some highlights for the week ahead.

Metro late night track work

These disruptions for maintenance involve trains sharing tracks starting at 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Red Line: Between Rhode Island Avenue and Takoma, expect travel delays of about 10 minutes.

Orange Line: Between Stadium-Armory and Eastern Market, expect 10-minute delays.
Between East Falls Church and West Falls Church, expect five-minute delays.

Blue Line: Between Stadium-Armory and Eastern Market, expect 10-minute delays.

Green/Yellow lines: Between Mount Vernon Square and L’Enfant Plaza, expect five-minute delays.

L’Enfant Plaza elevators

Metro is starting a modernization program on three of the four elevators at the busy L’Enfant Plaza station. The ones shut down connect the street to the station mezzanine, the mezzanine to the Green/Yellow Line platform for trains toward Branch Avenue and Huntington and the mezzanine to the Greenbelt side of the platform.

That leaves the elevator between the Blue/Orange Line platform and the northbound Green/Yellow Line platform.

Metro figures that by working on the three at the same time, it can shorten the project. The elevators should be back in service around the end of May. Meanwhile, some riders who need the elevators may find it easier to use the Metro Center and Gallery Place transfer stations.

I-270 lane closings

The Maryland State Highway Administration plans to install guardrails along Interstate 270 between Routes 118 and 117 this week. Watch for lane closings on the northbound side from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on the southbound side from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Rock Creek Parkway

The work on the Rock Creek Parkway rehabilitation project continues, with the southbound right curb lane closed approaching Waterside Drive. Lane adjustments are in effect during rush hours. One northbound lane is converted to southbound during the morning rush, until 9:10 a.m. A minimum of one lane will remain open in the southbound lanes at all times.

Arlington Boulevard interchange

The Virginia Department of Transportation continues to rebuild the Arlington Boulevard interchange with 10th Street and Courthouse Road near Rosslyn. This week, watch for lane closings on westbound Arlington Boulevard from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on the eastbound side from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

I-95 express lanes project

Watch for late night lane closings this week on both the regular and the HOV lanes on Interstate 95 south of the Capital Beltway in Virginia as part of the 95 Express Lanes construction. All lanes are scheduled to be open by 5 o’clock each morning.

Route 7, Tysons Corner

Lanes closures on Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) between Gosnell Road and Marshall’s Drive in Tysons will take place throughout the week to put the roadway into its final configuration as part of the Metro Silver Line construction project.

D.C. streetcars meeting

The District Department of Transportation has scheduled a meeting for Tuesday to provide an update on the H Street/Benning Road streetcar project. Street construction is scheduled to continue through the fall, when streetcar testing will begin, DDOT said.

Officials will be on hand to address block-by-block concerns about the project. The session is scheduled for 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Miner Elementary School, 601 15th St. NE.
