Pedestrian struck by truck at Scott Circle

A pickup truck struck a man walking at Scott Circle on Wednesday afternoon in Northwest Washington, forcing authorities to shut down a nearby street and causing traffic delays, D.C. police said.

The accident happened at the circle at 16th Street, about six blocks north of the White House, about 3 p.m., said Officer Hugh Carew, a police spokesman.  The victim was taken to a hospital with  head injuries that were potentially life-threatening, police said.

The accident damaged a traffic light and pulled down cables in the area. Authorities closed nearby lanes of Rhode Island Avenue and suggested that commuters avoid the area.

JulieAnn McKellogg of The Washington Post tweeted these photos from the scene:

This post has been updated to note that Rhode Island Avenue lanes are closed.
