The week ahead: Metro late-night work, Beltway lane closings, Silver Line construction

Travelers will find the first half of the week rainy and cool, the Capital Weather Gang says, but prospects improve on Thursday and Friday.

Traffic generating events: Rihanna has a concert scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Verizon Center. The Nationals are on the road all week. The Capitals start their playoff series with the New York Rangers  at the Verizon Center at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, and have another game at Verizon at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Metro has an extensive schedule of late-night track work this week. The region’s road work program is picking up after the winter lull. Here are some highlights.

(And join me at noon Monday for our weekly discussion of traffic and transit issues in the D.C. region.)

Metro weeknight work

Metrorail has some late-night maintenance scheduled each night through Thursday, so trains will be sharing tracks around work zones in these areas after 8 p.m.

  • Red Line between Dupont Circle and Van Ness. Expect delays of about five minutes, Metro says.
  • Yellow and Blue line between Reagan National Airport and Braddock Road. Delays of about 15 minutes.
  • Green Line between College Park and Greenbelt. Delays of about five minutes.

Trains will share tracks in these work zones after 10 p.m.

  • Red Line between Rhode Island Avenue and Takoma. Delays of about five minutes.
  • Orange Line between East Falls Church and West Falls Church. Delays of about 10 minutes.
  • Orange and Blue lines between Eastern Market and Stadium-Armory. Delays of about 15 minutes.
  • Orange Line between Foggy Bottom and Clarendon. Delays of about 15 minutes.
  • Blue Line between Foggy Bottom and Arlington Cemetery. Delays of about 10 minutes.

Interstate 95 express lanes

The I-95/395 reversible HOV lanes between Duke Street to Dumfries Road are scheduled to be closed 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Saturday. During those hours, drivers can reach the I-395 HOV lanes north to the District at Seminary Road.

Capital Beltway night work

While the 495 Express Lanes have been open since mid-November, night-time lane closings still occur as crews tend to details of the road work. On the Beltway’s outer loop between Georgetown Pike and I-395, drivers may find two or three lanes closed from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Friday. After midnight, the entire outer loop may be closed for up to half an hour.

Route 7 in Tysons Corner

Construction of the Silver Line’s first phase through Tysons and out to Reston is scheduled to end in September, the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project says. Before that, drivers along Route 7 in Tysons will encounter a great deal of road work as crews put the roadway into its final alignment, install traffic signals and put in landscaping.

Workers are paving the lanes closest to the median and moving the three left lanes into their final configuration. This will be followed by demolition and reconstruction on what will become the permanent fourth lane and the final curbs and sidewalks.

Dominion Virginia Power will install the streetlight poles.

Potholepalooza in D.C.

Every highway department attacks potholes in the spring, but the District Department of Transportation turns pothole repairs into a month-long social event. People can report D.C. potholes on Facebook and Twitter. They can turn in a pavement problem via e-mail or an online form. There’s an app, too. Worst comes to worst, they can make a phone call.

Then they can track the results on a DDOT Web page that displays a map, with differently colored pins marking “open potholes,” “pending potholes” and “closed potholes.” There’s as much information available online about individual potholes as there is about some of the region’s road projects.

Here’s a list of the ways that city residents and commuters can turn in an offending patch of pavement during the month-long campaign, known as Potholepalooza.

View the results by going to this Web page: gis.ddot.dc.gov/potholeapp.

Route 50/10th St./Courthouse Rd. interchange
Watch for lane closings on Route 50 (Arlington Boulevard) between 10th and North Rhodes streets as a part of the interchange reconstruction. The weekday closings on the westbound side are scheduled for 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on the eastbound side from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

East-West Highway

The Maryland State Highway Administration is resurfacing a mile of East-West Highway between New Hampshire Avenue and Riggs Road.

The project, which began last summer, is replacing deteriorated pavement on the heavily traveled route between Takoma Park and Hyattsville. Work on this phase should be done in late June. In the meantime, drivers are likely to encounter lane closings overnight Sundays through Thursdays.

Maine Avenue

Federal highway crews are rebuilding Maine Avenue SW between the 14th Street Bridge and Independence Avenue, including the Tidal Basin parking lot.

The project will affect traffic intersecting Maine Avenue from 15th Street SW, Ohio Drive, the Jefferson Memorial and the ramp to southbound Interstate 395. Work, scheduled to continue till early summer, includes milling out asphalt, repairing the base concrete and repaving. Watch out for uneven lanes during the work. There will be lane closings for the project, but all lanes will be open during rush hours.

Route 7 in Loudoun

Two of the three eastbound lanes on Route 7 between Belmont Ridge Road and River Creek Parkway in Loudoun County will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday and Tuesday nights. Loudoun County is removing the old Goose Creek Bridge adjoining Route 7. Workers have set up a 350-ton crane to lift the bridge steel and haul it away on trucks.

Drivers leaving the Leesburg area and heading east on Route 7 should use River Creek Parkway and Riverside Parkway to avoid delays, the Virginia Department of Transportation says.

Street Smart campaign

This spring’s Street Smart law enforcement campaign continues through May 13. Across the D.C. region, officers will be paying special attention to traffic law violations, including crosswalk violations by motorists and cyclists, as well as jaywalking pedestrians. Fines range from $40 to $500, depending on the type of the violation, and drivers can lose points.

Metro next weekend

On the Red Line, buses will replace trains between Fort Totten and Glenmont from 10 p.m. Friday through the rail system’s midnight closing Sunday. The Takoma, Silver Spring, Forest Glen and Wheaton stations will be closed.

On the Green Line, buses will replace trains between Congress Heights and Branch Avenue on Saturday. The Southern Avenue, Naylor Road, Suitland and Branch Avenue stations will be closed.
