The first part of the week will be gray and damp, the Capital Weather Gang says. The chance for sunshine is better Thursday and Friday. Road work continues to pick up its springtime pace, and Metro has late-night maintenance scheduled for four lines.

The Nationals are home for night games Tuesday and Wednesday against the Tigers, then start a weekend home series with the Cubs on Friday night. D.C. United plays at RFK Stadium on Wednesday night. The Capitals have a playoff game with the Rangers scheduled for Friday night at Verizon Center, if necessary.

Here are some highlights of road and rail activities for the work week.

Metro week night work schedule

After 8 p.m. each night through Thursday, Red Line travel will be delayed about five minutes between Dupont Circle and Van Ness, where trains will be sharing a track. On the Orange Line, expect delays of about 10 minutes between East Falls Church and West Falls Church.

After 10 p.m., Red Line trains will be delayed about five minutes in the single-tracking zone between Rhode Island Avenue and NoMa-Gallaudet. Anticipate Orange Line delays of about 15 minutes between Eastern Market and Stadium-Armory, and between Foggy Bottom and Clarendon.

Blue Line trains will be delayed about 15 minutes between Eastern Market and Stadium-Armory and about 10 minutes between Foggy Bottom and Arlington Cemetery. Green Line riders are likely to be delayed about five minutes between Naylor Road and Branch Avenue.

Silver Line construction

The work zones through Tysons and out to Reston for the Silver Line are very active day and night this week as crews try to finish up the first phase of the Dulles Metrorail project by early fall. These are a few of the key work zones that might affect your travels.

  • The left hand lanes on both sides of I-66 will be closed overnight between Great Falls Street and Route 267.
  • The left lanes of the eastbound Route 267 will be closed between Magarity Road and Idylwood Road during the day. The left lane of westbound Route 267 will be closed between Magarity Road and Pimmit Run.
  • Work on the Wiehle-Reston East station pedestrian bridges will require the closing of the two left lanes on both sides of the Dulles Toll Road at off-peak hours. During the night, workers will shift the closing to the two right lanes in both directions.
  • Sidewalk and light pole work will require day and night lane closings at several spots on Route 7 in Tysons. These closings will affect intersecting roads as well.
  • Work on the pedestrian bridge at the Tysons Corner Station and grading work will close lanes on Route 123, Tysons Boulevard, International Drive and Galleria Drive.

Arlington Boulevard interchange

The Virginia Department of Transportation will close lanes on Arlington Boulevard between 10th Street and North Rhodes Street for the long-term interchange reconstruction.

Monday through Friday, the closings on the westbound side will occur between 6:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. On the eastbound side, watch for lane closings from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Howard Road closings

The District of Department of Transportation may close the right lane and sidewalk of eastbound Howard Road SE between Firth Sterling Avenue and South Capitol Street on weeknights through Wednesday. (Bad weather might affect this schedule.)

The inspection work could begin as early as 9 p.m. and end as late as 5 a.m. the next morning. No lane closings will occur until 90 minutes after the end of the Nationals’ games on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Throughout the work, the Howard Road intersections will remain open to traffic. The sidewalks will be closed during working hours, with detours posted.

Maryland Route 4 bridges

The Maryland State Highway Administration is starting a three-mile reconstruction project along Route 4 (Pennsylvania Avenue) that includes replacement of the two old bridges over Route 223 (Woodyard Road) in Prince George’s County near Joint Base Andrews.

All travel lanes will be maintained during construction.

When the job is done, the westbound bridge will have two lanes, an acceleration lane for northbound Route 223 traffic, and a four-foot wide inside shoulder. The new bridge will have two lanes, a 10-foot outside shoulder, and a 24-foot inside shoulder.

Watch for single-lane closings between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights.

This summer, crews will close the ramp from northbound Route 223 to eastbound Route 4 and create a detour. The entire project is scheduled to be done in fall 2015.

 Purple Line meetings

The managers of the Maryland Transit Administration’s Purple Line light-rail project have scheduled five open houses in May to discuss progress. Here’s the schedule for this coming week:

●Tuesday, 5 to 8 p.m., Silver Spring Civic Center, 1 Veterans Pl., Silver Spring.

●Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m., Riverdale Elementary School, 5006 Riverdale Rd., Riverdale.

●Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Langley Park Community Center, 1500 Merrimac Dr., Hyattsville.

East-West Highway

The Maryland State Highway Administration is resurfacing a mile of East-West Highway between New Hampshire Avenue and Riggs Road.

The project, which began last summer, is replacing deteriorated pavement on the heavily traveled route between Takoma Park and Hyattsville. Work on this phase should be done in late June. Watch for lane closings Sunday through Thursday nights.

Mount Vernon Trail

Watch for detour signs on the Mount Vernon Trail between Waynewood Boulevard and Collingwood Road in Fort Hunt. The National Park Service is rebuilding trail bridges in this area.

This weekend on Metro

This coming weekend’s major track work: From 10 p.m. Friday through Metrorail’s midnight closing on Sunday, buses will replace Orange Line trains between Vienna and Ballston. The Vienna, Dunn Loring, West Falls Church, and East Falls Church stations will be closed.
