Hundreds of thousands of people in the D.C. area are planning to travel over Memorial Day weekend, and while the number is expected to be lower than it was last year, that still means lots of vehicles on the road and big crowds at the region’s airports.
The holiday also brings with it the usual transit and transportation changes. These could impact people staying in town as well as anyone traveling and returning home. Here’s what you need to know for getting around Monday:
First, the bad news: Yes, there will be track work and headaches over the long holiday weekend. Work on the Red and Orange lines will close a total of six stations from Friday at 10 p.m. until the system closes Monday night.
On the Red Line, the Shady Grove and Rockville stops will be closed. Shuttle buses will replace trains on this stretch; add about 20 minutes to your trip if you’re heading this way.
On the Orange Line, the Vienna, Dunn Loring, West Falls Church and East Falls Church stations will close. Shuttle buses will replace trains here, with some buses just running between Vienna and Ballston and others stopping at all of the closed stations. If you’re taking the direct Vienna-to-Ballston bus, add 25 minutes to your trip; if you’re taking a bus that will stop at every station, add 40 minutes.
Metro service will also change on Monday for the holiday. Metrorail will operate on a Sunday schedule, with the system opening at 7 a.m. and closing at midnight. (Off-peak fares will be charged all day and parking at Metro lots will be free.) Metrobus will also run a Sunday schedule (see schedules here). And all MetroAcess subscription trips are canceled, so anyone looking to use that should make a separate reservation (head here for more on that).
Maryland Area Regional Commuter trains won’t run on Monday.
The Virginia Railway Express will not run.
Alexandria’s DASH buses will run on a Sunday schedule. The King Street Trolley will run on a normal schedule from 11:30 a.m. to 10:15 p.m.
Buses will run on a Sunday schedule.
There will be no service on Monday. A few extra buses will run on Friday afternoon to accommodate people leaving early.
