Arlington considers lowering some speed limits

June 18, 2013

The Arlington County Board will hold a public hearing next month on a proposal to lower the speed limit on four roads in the county, which would slow traffic along the busy Rosslyn-Clarendon corridor.

The proposed amendment to the county code would would lower speed limits to 25 mph from the current 30 mph on four streets: Two key routes between Rosslyn and Clarendon (Wilson Boulevard between Washington Boulevard and Route 110 and Clarendon Boulevard between Washington Boulevard and N. Oak Street), a stretch near the Iwo Jima Memorial in Rosslyn (North Meade Street between Arlington Boulevard and Marshall Drive) and a road near the East Falls Church Metro station (North Sycamore Street between Washington Boulevard and 17th Street North). You can see maps of the four spans that would be impacted at the bottom of this post.

The county believes the lower speeds will improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

Arlington will host a public hearing discussing the changes as part of the County Board meeting on July 13. The board meeting starts at 8:30 a.m. at 2100 Clarendon Blvd., in the  boardroom on the 3rd floor.

In addition, Arlington will alter its county code so that it shows the proper speed limits for Interstates 66 and 395. These are the limits:

  • I-395 regular lanes from the Alexandria line to the District of Columbia line is 55 mph
  • I-395 HOV lanes from Alexandria line to 1.37 miles north of Quaker Lane is 65 mph
  • I-395 HOV lanes from 1.37 miles north of Quaker Lane to the District of Columbia line is 55 mph
  • I-66 from Virginia line to the ramp of N. Lynn Street is 45 mph
  • I-66 from the ramp of N. Lynn Street to the Fairfax County line is 55 mph

Here are the roads where the speed limits could be lowered:
