Fatal crash closes busy intersection in Montgomery County

Update, 10:07 p.m.:

The driver killed in the crash on Veirs Mill Road has been identified as Roy V. Tjongarero, 29, of the 15500 block of Baileys Lane in Silver Spring, Montgomery County police said.

Update, 8:02 a.m.:

The left lane of eastbound Veirs Mill Road has reopened between Parkland Drive and Randolph Road.

Original post, 6:14 a.m.:

A driver was killed in a car accident that has closed a busy Montgomery County roadway early Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Eastbound Veirs Mill Road is blocked between Turkey Branch Parkway and Randolph Road.

Authorities said the driver who was killed was traveling east on Veirs Mill about 3 a.m. when the car left the roadway, struck a utility pole on an embankment, and continued onto a secondary roadway.

Utilities were not affected, but the intersection will remain closed for the investigation. Police have not identified the driver and do not yet know what caused the crash.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area this morning.
