Lower SmarTrip balance needed for automatic reloading

Metro is changing the way SmarTrip cards can be automatically reloaded.

Beginning next week, riders who have signed up to have money automatically loaded on their cards will see that extra cash added on when the card’s balance is below $10.

The program, introduced last fall, had previously kicked in when the balance fell below $20.

Metro reports that more than 22,000 riders have signed up for automatic reloading. The transit agency said the balance is being lowered because some riders said that they did not want to keep the higher balance on their card.
