Major delays on I-95N near BWI

Update, 7:56 a.m.:

Major delays persist on I-95 North after a fiery early morning crash that brought traffic to a standstill for several hours.

Traffic is moving slowly through the three left northbound lanes. The right lane remains closed. Drivers are advised to find an alternate route, if possible.

Update, 6:14 a.m.:

The three left lanes of northbound I-95 have reopened, leaving only the right lane closed, according to the Maryland State Highway Administration.

Officials said major delays remain, extending back to the Howard County line. Traffic has been at a standstill since about 3 a.m., when a tow truck and tractor-trailer collided, resulting in a fire and fuel spill.

Original post, 5:44 a.m.:

Northbound I-95 is closed after the exit that leads to Thurgood Marshall/Baltimore-Washington International Airport so emergency crews can clean up a gas spill that resulted from a fiery 3 a.m. collision.

Maryland State Police said a tow truck and a tractor-trailer collided in the northbound lanes of I-95 early Tuesday. The tractor-trailer burst into flames, but nobody was injured.

Northbound traffic is being redirected at Route 195, the road that leads to the airport, police said. I-95 is closed until I-695, the Baltimore beltway.

State police said crews were waiting for sand trucks to arrive as of 5:30 a.m. to remove gas from the roadway. There was no estimate as to when the highway would reopen; drivers are advised to seek alternate routes.
