Crash snarls inner loop in Md.

October 10, 2013

A crash on the inner loop of the Capital Beltway in Prince George’s County continues to snarl traffic leading to the exit for Annapolis Road/Maryland 450.

All inner loop lanes were closed until the two left lanes reopened shortly before 6:30 a.m. A third lane reopened just before 7:30 a.m., and the fourth lane reopened at around 9:30 a.m. The Maryland State Highway Administration also warns that the right lane will be briefly closed again later this morning.

Heavy delays remain approaching this spot, with the backups likely exacerbated by the rain soaking the region.

The accident, which occurred at about 4 a.m. on Thursday morning, involved two tractor trailers and an SUV, police said.

A tractor trailer towing a mobile home hit a tractor trailer with two trailers attached this morning, causing the mobile home to become detached and come to a stop on the Beltway, according to the Maryland State Police. A short time later, a GMC SUV driving on the Beltway hit the mobile home.

The driver of the SUV was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries, police said. There’s no information yet on the identity of the driver or their status after being taken to the hospital.
