Officials with the TSA here in Washington, D.C. and at airport checkpoints across the country will observe a moment of silence on Friday to honor officer Gerardo Hernandez, who was shot and killed at Los Angeles International Airport last week.

The observance will take place at 9:20 a.m. Pacific Standard Time (12:20 p.m. Eastern Standard Time)

Hernandez, 39, was a married father of two who friends and colleagues remembered as a dedicated family member and wonderful friend.  He is the first TSA officer to be killed while on the job since the agency was formed following the 2001 terrorist attacks. He had worked for TSA since 2010.

A public memorial service for Hernandez will be held Nov. 12, 2013, at 10 a.m., PST at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena. A memorial fund also has been created in his memory.

Paul Ciancia, 23, of Los Angeles, has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting. He is accused of killing Hernandez and wounded three others, including two TSA officers, before he was stopped by police near a Burger King on the departure-gate side of the security checkpoint.
