Authorities said they are “getting close” to re-opening the northbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway from the Key Bridge to the Capital Beltway.

There was also an earlier incident involving a tractor trailer that jack-kniffed in the northbound lanes of the parkway near Route 123 in the McLean area police said. It was not immediately known the condition of those involved. There were also several abandoned cars in the area that got stuck in the snow in the northbound lanes of the parkway.

The northbound lanes of the roadway are expected to reopen within the next 30 minutes, police said.

The George Washington Memorial Parkway’s northbound lanes are closed because of snow from the Key Bridge to the Capital Beltway, authorities said. The southbound lanes of the parkway are open.

The northbound lanes of the northern section of the roadway were closed around 6:20 a.m., U.S. Park Police said. Rock Creek Parkway between Ohio and Beach drives is also closed.

Authorities throughout the region warned motorists to stay off the roads, as crews were having a tough time keeping up with the heavy snowfall in the early morning hours.

No major accidents were reported, but area police said some of the cars that were out on the roadways were getting stuck in snow. Police said the volume of traffic for a weekday rush hour is well below normal and they advised drivers who have to be out to slow down, allow extra time and leave plenty of space between vehicles.
