Route 1 northbound lanes reopen in Springfield

All northbound lanes of Route 1 in Springfield near Backlick Road have reopened after an earlier fatal crash involving a pedestrian.

Fairfax County Police said the northbound lanes of Route 1 in Springfield near Fort Belvoir are closed Thursday morning due to a fatal crash involving a pedestrian.

The incident near Backlick Road occurred at 5 a.m., but police did not have immediate details of what caused the crash.

Authorities said it was not clear how long the roadway would be closed. Traffic was starting to back up as cars sat on Route 1 in the early morning hours. Police advised drivers to avoid the area and use Interstate 95.
