Canal Road lane closed for depression in road

The westbound lane of Canal Road is closed as transportation officials and engineers inspect a growing road depression.

Reggie Sanders, a spokesman for the District Department of Transportation, said officials closed Canal Road between Foxhall Road and Arizona Avenue because “the integrity of the road has been compromised.”

He said Canal Road has a growing road depression and officials do not know how long the closure will continue. For rush hour, Sanders said DDOT plans to reverse the only open eastbound lane to a westbound one for travelers.

DDOT closed the road at noon for inspection by engineers and officials from the District Water and Sewer Authority.

“We don’t want any traffic to flow through there until we know what we have,” Sanders said.

Traffic can travel eastbound on Canal Road Northwest, but according to a DDOT release, this could also change. The release said temporary signs and traffic control measure are in place to alert motorists as they travel through the work zone.
