A fatal crash on Old Dominion Drive in Fairfax County has closed a segment of the busy commuter street for the duration of the morning rush hour.

A car hit a tree on the side of the road around 3 a.m., according to Fairfax County police spokesman Bud Walker. One adult man was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, and at least one other person was injured, Walker said. Around 6:45 a.m., Walker said detectives were en route to the accident to investigate its cause.

Another police officer said that the car toppled the tree, which was blocking the road. A short portion of Old Dominion Drive, from Towlston Road to Peacock Station Road, was closed. Walker said that he anticipated the road closure would cause traffic delays in the surrounding area during rush hour, and the road would not open until about 9 or 10 a.m.
