Nothing like that #NewMetroCarSmell

After much anticipation, Metro’s new 7000 series of rail cars have, well, hit the rails.

They were spotted Wednesday at Union Station. Today they’re making the rounds of the Orange and Blue lines.

We’re hoping to collect a few snapshots of the cars as they move through the Metro system. So that’s where you — yes, you humble Metro rider —come in. We’d love it if you’d send us your snaps of the cars when you spot them. If you tweet, used the hashtag #newmetrocarsmell and we’ll capture and post your tweets. Same with Instagram. And hey, don’t like #newmetrocarsmell? We’re open to suggestions.

The cars making their way through the system  are test cars. Data from these test runs are being collected and sent back to the manufacturer, Kawasaki, and will be used to build the final versions. With any luck, Metro officials said, passengers will begin riding the new cars later this year.
