The weekend and beyond: Race for the Cure, Metro schedules and Gaga

[This post has been updated.]

The District’s event planners have bulked up on Saturday, but this will be a busy Mother’s Day weekend all the way. The Capital Weather Gang’s forecast shows Sunday as the better of the two days, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms on a muggy Saturday.

Race for the Cure
The 2014 Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure is scheduled to begin and end at the Washington Monument after participants have looped around the Tidal Basin on Saturday morning. The start times are 8 a.m. for runners and 8:15 a.m. for walkers. See a pdf map of the route on the race’s Web site.

Metrorail will open at 5 a.m., two hours earlier than normal. The Metro stations closest to the start area are Smithsonian and Federal Triangle, on the Orange and Blue lines; Metro Center, for Red Line riders; and Archives on the Green and Yellow lines. Green and Yellow Line riders could choose to transfer to the Red Line at Gallery Place or to the Orange and Blue lines at L’Enfant Plaza if they want to save the walking for the event itself.

See also the schedule below for weekend track work.

Metro weekend work
All stations are open this weekend, but trains will be sharing tracks on some segments of the Red and Orange lines. Here’s the schedule for 10 p.m. Friday through the rail system’s midnight closing on Sunday.

Red Line. Crews will be working on the track bed between Van Ness and Friendship Heights and on the fencing and lighting between NoMa-Gallaudet and Rhode Island Avenue. Trains are scheduled to leave the ends of the line at Shady Grove and Glenmont every 15 minutes throughout the weekend. But between Van Ness and NoMa-Gallaudet, more trains will be in service from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. In that zone, trains should reach platforms every 10 to 12 minutes.

Orange Line. Crews will work on platforms and tracks between Stadium-Armory and Cheverly and on the fencing and the communications cables between East Falls Church and West Falls Church. All along the line, trains will be scheduled to reach stations every 24 minutes.

Green Line. On Saturday and Sunday from 10 p.m. until the rail system closes, riders at West Hyattsville will board trains on the Greenbelt side. This will allow crews to continue testing the new generation of rail cars along the tracks.

National Police Week Race
The National Police Week Race is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. The route takes participants through the Judiciary Square and Capitol Hill areas. See a course map on the Police Week event’s Web site.

Street closings, which will begin as early as 5 a.m. and continue till 11 a.m., follow the route of the race: South on Third Street from F Street NW, east on Pennsylvania Avenue, south on First Street, west on Maryland Avenue SW, south on Third Street SW, west on C street SW, north on Fourth Street SW, east on Independence Avenue SW, north on Third Street, west on Pennsylvania Avenue NW, making a U-turn at the West Crossover (Pennsylvania and Constitution avenues), east on Pennsylvania Avenue NW, north on Third Street, west on G Street, south on Fifth Street, East on F Street to the finish line on F Street between Fourth and Fifth streets.

Petworth festival
The Celebrate Petworth Festival is scheduled for noon to 6 p.m. Saturday in the 800 block of Upshur Street NW, which will be closed to traffic from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The nearest Metrorail station is Georgia Avenue/Petworth.

Downtown Silver Spring
A construction project at the Lenox Park apartment building just west of the Silver Spring Metro station will require some lane closings and lane shifts on Saturday, the Maryland State Highway Administration says. At 5 a.m., a crane will move in front of the apartment building at the corner of East West Highway and Colesville Road. During the day, it will be hoisting roofing materials.

The lane closings and shifts will occur along East West Highway between 16th Street and Colesville Road. The work should be done by 7 p.m. Saturday, but during the day, drivers may find up to three eastbound lanes and one westbound lane closed. Access to all the parking lots, garages and businesses along this part of East West Highway will be maintained, the SHA says, but watch for flaggers on the roadway.

Route 29 at Northwest Branch
Weekend traffic on the northbound side of Route 29 was jammed between Northwest Branch and University Boulevard last weekend because flood damaged has closed the right lane of the bridge over Northwest Branch, near the Trader Joe’s shopping center. Watch for similar conditions this weekend. On Monday, the Maryland State Highway Administration is scheduled to begin an emergency repair project that will close lanes on both sides of the bridge.

Verizon Center events
The Wizards and the Pacers are scheduled to continue their NBA playoff series at Verizon Center at 8 p.m. Friday and again on Sunday. The Lady Gaga concert that risked clashing with the NBA schedule has been reset for Monday at 7:30 p.m. Events at Verizon Center draw crowds to the Gallery Place Metrorail station below the arena. After events, some riders may prefer walking a few blocks west to Metro Center or, if they are Red Line riders, west to the Judiciary Square station.
