Backups on outer loop of Beltway

Drivers should expect delays Friday morning on the outer loop of the Capital Beltway in Silver Spring.

A vehicle apparently struck a pole along the roadway between New Hampshire Avenue and University Boulevard, according to highway officials. There were reports from drivers of up to four-mile backups, even though the crash scene has been cleared and the roadway is open.

Authorities advised drivers to avoid the area. There were no immediate details available on how the crash happened or the condition of the driver.
