A major gas main break, which went uncontrolled for about an hour and a half, has closed roads and caused the evacuation of a parking garage in Gaithersburg.
A back hoe operated by a private construction company struck and broke a two-inch stub off of a six-inch high-pressure gas line on the 9700 block of Fields Road, according to Washington Gas spokeswoman Mariam Nabizad.
Montgomery County Fire Department spokesman Peter Piringer said that dozens of construction workers were evacuated from a nearby parking garage. No one was injured and no fire was reported, he said, and Nabizad said that no customers lost service.
Piringer said that the gas main break occurred around 1:15 or 1:20 p.m. and was controlled at about 2:45 p.m. Crews were still working on a repair at 4:20 p.m., Nabizad said.
Roads in the area, including Fields Road between Rio Boulevard and Washingtonian Boulevard and smaller roads connected to Fields Road, were closed, according to Piringer.
