A gas leak on the 8700 block of Georgia Avenue has shut down several blocks in Silver Spring and forced the evacuation of an office building.
No one has been reported injured. Traffic is moving again in the northbound lanes, but southbound lanes of Georgia Avenue between Spring Street and Colesville Road will be closed for several hours, Montgomery County Fire Department spokesman Pete Piringer said on Twitter.
Piringer said that the Silver Spring Gateway Building, a six-story office building where dozens of people were working, was evacuated.
Ruben Rodriguez, a spokesman for Washington Gas, said that a contractor working for a cable company hit a 3-inch plastic gas main while drilling in the street. Rodriguez had initially said that a 3.5-inch main had been broken. The leak was reported to Washington Gas at about 12:50 p.m., and the gas was shut off about two hours later. Six customers in the area lost service.
