Prior sex offender arrested for exposing himself to 8-year-old on Metro bus

A Rockville man was charged Thursday with exposing himself to an 8-year-old girl on a Metro bus.

Police said the girl’s mother reported that the man, later identified as Mario Amaro, 48, sat next to her daughter on a Y8 bus headed toward Silver Spring on the afternoon of July 9. He exposed himself to the girl, authorities said.

Two days later, the girl and her mother were on the same bus, and the girl spotted Amaro. Her mother took a picture of him and provided it to police.

Metro Transit Police looked in the Maryland Sex Offender Registry and found a person who matched the photograph and description of Amaro provided by the mother and daughter. Amaro was in the registry because he was convicted in April 2012 of forcible sexual contact with an elementary school-aged child, who was a stranger to Amaro.

He was arrested by Metro Transit Police on Wednesday on the charge of indecent exposure. Police said that he confirmed that the mother’s photograph was a picture of him.
