Water main break blocks Route 1 in Hyattsville through Friday a.m.

A water main that ruptured Thursday night in Hyattsville will dampen Friday morning’s commute along Route 1, officials said late Thursday. The 4800 block of Rhode Island Avenue (Route 1) is closed in both directions, and will remain that way Friday morning.

Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission officials have been working to repair a broken 73-year-old main in the 4800 block of Rhode Island Avenue since about 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

It took WSSC workers three hours to stem the water flow, officials said. An estimated six million gallons of water gushed into the street.

Officials expect their work on the 12-inch main to continue well into Friday, but they hope to have the road reopened by the evening commute.
