Chain Bridge Road in Fairfax open again after gas leak

Updated at 6:54 p.m.

A construction crew struck a 3-inch gas main near 3050 Chain Bridge Road in Fairfax on Thursday afternoon, causing several homes to be evacuated and the busy road to be closed in both directions.

By 5 p.m., the southbound lanes were open again, and Washington Gas spokesman Ruben Rodriguez said that the gas had been shut off within the last 20 minutes.

By 6:50 p.m., all roads were open, the main was fixed and everyone who had evacuated was able to return to their homes, a county police dispatcher said.

Fairfax County fire department spokesman Dan Schmidt said that no one was injured, and Rodriguez said that no service was interrupted.
