I-270 lanes reopen after crash, sand spill

Updated at 5:15 p.m.

All lanes of I-270 in Montgomery County have opened again following the collision of a dump truck and a car, which caused the truck to spill a large quantity of sand onto the highway. Traffic is still very slow after the accident, which closed five lanes for more than two hours.

A Maryland State Police dispatcher said that the car cut the dump truck off when both were traveling on I-270 about 2:44 p.m. The truck swerved to avoid hitting the car and flipped over.

The driver of the dump truck was trapped, and rescuers took more than half an hour to get him out. He was suffering from injuries that were not life-threatening, the dispatcher said. A passenger in the dump truck got out of the truck unaided.

The driver of the car also suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.

When it turned over on I-270, at Montrose Road, the truck spilled about 30,000 to 40,000 pounds of sand that it was carrying. State police used a loader and dump truck to remove the sand.
