Suspended Melky Cabrera could still win NL batting title

Melky Cabrera’s season may be over, but his pursuit of a batting title is not.

Melky Cabrera’s dream season ended Wednesday when Major League Baseball suspended the San Francisco Giants outfielder 50 games after he tested positive for testosterone.
But while Cabrera will not take the field for the Giants again this regular season, he still has a great shot to win the National League batting title.
Cabrera is currently second in the league with a .346 average and is one plate appearance short of the 502 needed to qualify for the league batting title. But according to MLB rules, he would have hitless at-bats added to his total until he reaches the minimum. In Cabrera’s case, that single at-bat would have no impact on his average — in fact, it could give him the edge over Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen, who could be hard-pressed to maintain his league-leading .359 mark the rest of the way.
But if McCutchen tails off and Cabrera does finish atop the league, would MLB really give a proven cheater the award?

Report: Sam Bradford could need ankle surgery after season

A great deal of attention has been paid during training camp to the ankle of St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford and there’s a good reason for that: Bradford says it isn’t 100 percent and a report today indicates he may need surgery after the season.
Bradford, who missed six games last season with a severe high ankle sprain, has said that the ankle “is as good as it’s going to feel” and Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.com reports that “there is a definite possibility that a corrective procedure will be prescribed, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.”
The Rams believe they can manage the ankle throughout the season and that another offseason of rest may help it heal. “It is a little bit frustrating that it's somewhat there still,” Bradford said Aug. 5. “I thought that with rest in the offseason, it would've been gone by now. But it's not. I've talked about it with Reg [trainer Reggie Scott]. I understand what his plan is, and I think we're doing as good as we can right now in managing it.”

Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley donates $60,000 to cover school budget cuts
In an offseason littered with DUIs, domestic violence and downright dumb decisions from a number of NFL players, Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley chose to devote his resources to a better cause.

This fall, a substantial cut in the Saginaw (Mi.) Public Schools athletic department budget would have forced students to pay an annual $75 participation fee to play sports.
That just didn’t sit right for Woodley, who helped lead Saginaw High to a state championship in 2000. So Woodley covered the budget cut himself — all $60,000 of it.
“People can make the argument that it wasn’t going to hurt participation, but it was,” Saginaw High athletic director Dan Szatkowski told MLive.com. “Because of this, kids will have an opportunity to participate, an opportunity to be part of a team. People don’t understand how important that is.”

Jason Witten has a “very serious injury”

Jason Witten will be out for an undetermined period of time as he recovers from a lacerated spleen.
(Gus Ruelas / AP)
Jason Witten, as suspected, will miss the rest of the preseason and possibly the Dallas Cowboys’ season opener Sept. 5 because of a lacerated spleen.
Witten does not, as of now, require surgery for the injury he suffered on a blindside hit in Monday’s preseason game against the Oakland Raiders.
“It's a very serious injury, and we're really taking this thing day by day,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. “He has to be very still and idle for the next week to 10 days, so you won't see him out here on the practice field; he won't play in the game this week or next week. We've just got to make sure he heals as well as possible, as quickly as possible.

Reggie Bush finally returns Heisman Trophy

Reggie Bush’s 2005 trophy is back in the possession of the Heisman Trust.
(Julie Jacobson - AP)
He took his sweet time, but former USC star Reggie Bush finally returned the 2005 Heisman Trophy that was rescinded five years later due to major NCAA infractions.
The Miami Dolphins running back said in a radio interview on “The Dan Patrick Show” Wednesday that he personally mailed the trophy to the Heisman Trust. Spokesman Tim Henning told ESPNLosAngeles.com that the trophy is in the Trust’s possession, and that Bush had returned it “some time” ago.
USC returned its copy of Bush’s award in August 2010, shortly after the NCAA levied heavy sanctions against the school’s football program for violations relating to improper benefits Bush and basketball player O.J. Mayo received during their time on campus.
As part of their punishment, the Trojans were required to completely disassociate their program from Bush, who later announced he would “forfeit” his Heisman Trophy. But until this year, Bush retained possession of the iconic statue.
