In the place reserved for Osi Umenyiora during media availability Wednesday morning at the hype machine known as Super Bowl Week, there was only an empty chair. Soon, in Osi Umenyiora’s bank account, there will be an empty spot where $20,000 used to be.
The New York Giants’ defensive end was fined by the NFL for skipping the mandatory media session Wednesday morning. Umenyiora was present and on time for the team’s 12:15 p.m. meeting, so there were no concerns about his absence and he was expected to practice this afternoon at the University of Indianapolis. Umenyiora was the only member of either the Giants or New England Patriots to miss today’s 45-minute interview sessions.
Umenyiora issued a statement later, saying: “I misunderstood the schedule. It won’t happen again and I will be at tomorrow’s media session and available after the game. I apologize for any inconvenience my absence this morning may have caused.”
