Blood clot delays Mariano Rivera’s knee surgery

It wasn’t pretty, but David Robertson picked up the first save of the post-Mariano Rivera era for the New York Yankees on Tuesday.

Meantime, Rivera’s surgery to repair the torn ACL he suffered last week was bumped back after doctors discovered a blood clot in his calf, as first reported by the New York Post.

On Monday, The New York Post quoted Rivera’s agent, Fernando Cuza, saying the 12-time All-Star closer had “complications” during his pre-surgery exam.

“I’m OK,” Rivera said.

Rivera said he was unaware of the blood clot until Monday’s exam, but the set back has not altered his plan to return in 2013.

“I’m feeling better now, though. They’re taking care of it,” Rivera said of the blood clot. His surgery has been pushed back for at least a few weeks to allow the clot to fully heal.
