It wasn’t New York Giants Coach Tom Coughlin’s idea of a good time, but then he isn’t the first person you think of when you think “entertainment.” It did, however, spice up a preseason NFL game midway through the third quarter when thumbs were itching to switch channels.
Giants running back Brandon Jacobs and New York Jets rookie defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson got into a dustup in and their fisticuffs were rewarded with ejections. in the Jets’ 17-3 victory at MetLife Stadium. Their shoving match escalated after Mario Manningham caught a 7-yard pass with 8:37 left in the third quarter.
“That's not good football,” Coughlin said. “That's something you just don't want to see. You can't lose your control is the message there. And when you do, you have to pay the price.”
Jets Coach Rex Ryan’s take on the ejections? “I can understand it because I think both guys swung at each other,” Ryan said. “Our guy swung second. He swung hard, but he swung second.”
The game was being played on Monday night because Hurricane Irene forced the move from Saturday night, but it wasn’t on “Monday Night Football.” It was carried by the NFL Network. The teams play again for real on Christmas Eve.
