Chargers reportedly sign Nick Novak to replace injured Nate Kaeding

The San Diego Chargers are expected to sign veteran kicker Nick Novak to replace Nate Kaeding, who is out the rest of the season after tearing knee ligaments Sunday.

Novak, 30, beat out Shayne Graham and Dave Rayner for the job, according to multiple reports.

The injury to Kaeding occurred on the opening kickoff of the Charger’ game against the Minnesota Vikings. He was hurt as he tried to tackle Percy Harvin, who ran 103 yards for the touchdown. “He planted and he kind of got spread out,” Chargers Coach Norv Turner said. “There was no contact on the play.”

Novak, a former kicker at Maryland, has played for, among other teams, the Washington Redskins.
