Eagles defensive lineman Mike Patterson collapses, is okay after ‘seizure’ (updated)

Updated at 3:34 p.m.

Mike Patterson is expected to remain hospitalized as he undergoes tests to determine the origin of a seizure he suffered on the practice field at the Philadelphia Eagles’ training camp this morning.

Fluid on the brain has been ruled out, but dehydration has not, Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Patterson was bleeding from the mouth after biting his tongue during the seizure, contributing to a scary scene.

Mike Patterson’s agent, J.R. Rickert, updated his client’s condition and confirmed that he had lost consciousness, issuing a statement:

“Mike Patterson is alert, in no pain and doing well. He lost consciousness.”

He added, “We are very grateful for everyone’s prayers and support. Mike will be back at practice as soon as the doctors clear him.”

Defensive lineman Mike Patterson suffered a seizure during the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice this morning, team trainer Rick Burkholder told the media.

Patterson is undergoing tests to determine the cause and being treated for dehydration at Lehigh Valley Hospital. He was joking with staff members, Burkholder said, and texting updates on his condition. He reportedly had assistant trainer Chris Peduzzi text the team “I’m cool.”

Details of the seizure reveal just how scary it was: It lasted four minutes and Patterson did lose consciousness, Burkholder said. Patterson has no history of seizures and Burkholder declined to speculate about what caused it.

Earlier in practice, Trevor Laws was carted off. He has a hip injury.

Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Mike Patterson was taken by ambulance from the Lehigh training camp practice field after collapsing during morning drills.

Patterson apparently went into convulsions — there was no contact involved — and was stablized by the Eagles’ medical staff as players and coaches stood in stunned silence, then raised their helmets in tribute as he was taken off. Patterson was hooked up to an IV immediately and had movement in his extremities.

Moments before Patterson collapsed, fellow defensive tackle Trevor Laws was carted off after suffering a leg injury.
