Kobe Bryant’s parents safe after Japan earthquake

The parents of Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant were evacuated from their hotel in Tokyo, but are safe after the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan.

Bryant said he had spoken to his parents, according to ESPN Radio’s John Ireland, and that they were not hurt. A former NBA player, Joe “Jellybean” Bryant was hired Friday as an assistant coach by the Los Angeles Sparks, a WNBA team for which he previously was an assistant and a head coach. He has coached in Japan, with the Tokyo Apache and Hokkaido in the Japanese Basketball League.
