Mark Sanchez, Jets offense awake from slumber in rout of Bills

Remember when the Jets failed to score a touchdown until their final preseason game and the New York media was predicting doom and gloom for Gang Green?

Upon further review, it turns out the Jets do have an offense after all.

Mark Sanchez led the way as New York torched Buffalo’s revamped defense in a 48-28 blowout, and displayed the firepower that was nonexistent in the preseason.

The much-maligned quarterback has done his best to ignore — or at least accept — Tim Tebow’s presence in his rear-view mirror, but on Sunday he shrugged off all distractions to produce one of the better performances of his career: 19 of 27, 266 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

“It looked like we were making up for lost time there,” Sanchez said.

No kidding.

Other bright spots included rookie Stephen Hill catching a pair of touchdowns and running back Shonn Greene eclipsing his single-game rushing total from all but two games last season with 94 yards and a score on 27 carries.

Tim Tebow’s Jets debut was as inconspicuous as possible — just 11 yards on five carries — although Tebow said afterward that the Jets “didn’t show too much” of their new Wildcat plays.

But one week after the New York Post portrayed Sanchez, Tebow and Rex Ryan into clowns on the cover of their 2012 NFL preview, the Jets got a measure of retribution.

Today’s headline: “Clown Prince: No joke! Sanchez, ‘Gag Green’ win laugher”

It’s just one game, but for a team has been the laughing stock of its city and, at times, the NFL, Sunday’s win was an important one — particularly for Sanchez.

“I think it’s human nature to want to hesitate after a tough year like last year,” Sanchez said last week, “but you have to fight that and really attack it and that’s what I’m trying to do.”
