Olympian Carl Lewis expected to seek office in New Jersey

Carl Lewis, nine-time Olympic gold medalist, may be running again. He is expected to announce today that he will be a Democratic candidate for a seat in the New Jersey Senate, according to published reports.

“All indications are that he will run,” a Democratic source told the Philadelphia Inquirer. In a press release Sunday night, Lewis, 50 and so good at athletics, so bad at national-anthem rendering, said he planned to announce “my political decision” but could not be reached for comment.

Candidates have until 4 p.m. to file and Lewis would figure to be a longshot, facing Dawn Addiego, the Republican state Senator, for a seat that covers the solidly Republican east side of Burlington County.

Last fall, former Philadelphia Eagles lineman Jon Runyan, a Republican, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives last fall. He represents a district that includes Burlington and Ocean counties.
