Piermario Morosini, Italian soccer player, dies on pitch after heart attack

The Associated Press is reporting that Piermario Morosini, who plays for Italian Serie B team Livorno, has died after suffering cardiac arrest in the 31st minute of Saturday’s game at Pescara.

Morosini’s death was confirmed by a cardiologist at Pescara’s Santo Spirito hospital. The 25-year-old midfielder was dead when he arrived at the hospital, Edoardo De Blasio said.

The match was called off, and all Italian soccer games this weekend have been postponed.

On March 17, Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba went into cardiac arrest during an FA Cup quarterfinal against Spurs. His heart stopped beating on its own for 78 minutes, but Muamba is making “strong and steady improvements,” his team said last week.
