In a stunning move just five days before the season opener, the Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to release starting quarterback and start Luke McCown on Sunday.
Rookie Blaine Gabbert will back up McCown in the Jags’ opener against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, according to Fox’s Jay Glazer. The team does not have a third quarterback on the roster.
The move is a bold one , but Coach Jack Del Rio did the same thing in 2007 when he cut Byron Leftwich on Sept. 1 and named Garrard the starter.
Garrard, who is signed through 2014, has a base salary of $8.075 million for this season and if he were on the 53-man roster Saturday, his salary would have become guaranteed.
