Report: Tiger Woods will play in PGA Championship; old friend is new caddie

ger Woods has made official what seemed likely when he committed to play in next week’s WGC Bridgestone Invitational: he intends to play in the PGA Championship, too.

A PGA of America official told CBS that Woods had committed to play in the last major of the year, which begins Aug. 11 at Atlanta Athletic Club.

Woods has spent the spring and summer recovering from knee and Achilles’ injuries. He initially hurt his left knee, the one on which he has had multiple surgeries, during the Masters in April and has played only nine holes of competitive golf since.

Woods will have a new caddie beside him when the Bridgestone begins Aug. 4 at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. Bryon Bell, a long-time friend and former teammate on Woods’ high school golf team, has been with him since — for better and for worse.

He toted the bag when Woods won the Buick Invitational in 1999. He has also been part of Woods’ business empire — he was president of Woods’ slumping golf-course design company — and, gulp, his name turns up in stories about the sex scandal that ruined Woods’ marriage.

This is going to be interesting.
