When LSU booted its most explosive playmaker off its roster this summer, most everyone expected Tyrann Mathieu to transfer elsewhere to continue his college football career.

But the Heisman Trophy finalist nicknamed the Honey Badger instead chose to remain in Baton Rouge while he considered his future.

Now Mathieu’s adoptive father says the 20-year-old cornerback plans to re-enroll at LSU today, despite the fact that he is not eligible to play for the Tigers again until 2013.

Tyrone Mathieu told WVUE-TV in New Orleans that his son plans to enroll at the Baton Rouge campus today — the final day to enroll for the fall semester.

“Tyrann is working on discipline, maturity and character,” Tyrone Mathieu said in late August when he announced that his adopted son would not play football in 2012. “He’s making life adjustments.”

Mathieu has been working with former NBA player John Lucas as he works through his rehabilitation. The final straw that forced LSU coach Les Miles to kick Mathieu off the team on Aug. 10 was reportedly a failed drug test. Mathieu has been at the Right Step Recovery center since.

“Tyrann is a lot better, thank God,” Mathieu’s adoptive mother, Sheila Mathieu told ESPN. “He’s strengthening himself and he continues to do so. He’s focused on academics.”

Mathieu had 76 total tackles, two interceptions, six forced fumbles and four total touchdowns last season to help the Tigers reach the BCS National Championship game. He was given the Bednarik Award as the nation’s top defensive player.
