Romanian soccer fans attack players (Video)

A soccer fan in Romania ran onto the field during a match between Steaua Bucharest and Petrolul Ploiesti and attacked a player from behind.

The player suffered a broken cheekbone from the impact of a blindside punch to the face. His teammates tackled the attacker and got in a few kicks before security removed the fan.

Dragos Petrut Enache was held for 24 hours after slugging Steaua Bucharest defender George Galamaz during Sunday night’s match. Galamaz remained in the hospital and according to the club will be sidelined for 45 days.

Two of the players who began beating Enache were sent off with red cards. Steaua, the visiting side, was awarded a penalty following a 10-minute stoppage after the attack. They converted to take a 2-0 lead, and after Petrolul Ploiesti fans began throwing flares on the field, the referee called off the game — but not before Steaua goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu suffered burns to his back when he was struck by a flare on the field.

The incident took place on the same day New York Red Bulls defender Rafael Marquez chucked a ball at Los Angeles Galaxy star Landon Donovan and then tried to head-butt another Galaxy player.

It was an odd Sunday in the world of soccer to say the least.
