It can’t be easy being Wayne Rooney’s little brother. The Manchester United and English national team superstar gets all the headlines — good and bad — front page stories, glory and standing ovations.

But Tuesday — at least for one night — John Rooney had his moment in the spotlight.

The New York Red Bulls seldom-used rookie scored the game-winning goal in the 65th minute — his first with the team — to lead his team to a 2-1 victory over F.C. New York in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup .

Rooney’s shot into the bottom corner completed the Red Bulls’ comeback and drew chants of “Best Rooney Ever” from the crowd at Red Bull Arena.

Before Tuesday, the younger Rooney had seen only 27 minutes of action all season.

“It’s a physical league,” Rooney said. “I thought it was going to be slower than what it was, but when I watched it on TV, you could see it’s a fast league. The way they play it, it’s pretty much the same as England.”
