And on a day when the course at the Crooked Stick Golf Club gave away birdies by the bundle, McIlroy and Woods failed to disappoint.

With an 8-under 64, the world’s top-ranked golfer finished his opening round in a four-way tie for first place alongside Webb Simpson, Bo Van Pelt and Graham DeLaet. Woods shot 65 to finish one stroke back of the leaders.

Both players came out firing as Woods birdied three of his first four holes and five of seven with a single bogey in the mix. McIlroy matched him with three birdies, one bogey and an eagle on the back and dropped in four more birdies to finish off his day. Both players made birdie on the par-5 ninth to cap their brilliant starts to the weekend.
