Ryan Mundy fined for hit on Darrius Heyward-Bey

For a truly frightening helmet-to-helmet hit that left Oakland Raiders wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey with a concussion and neck strain, Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Mundy has been fined $21,000 by the NFL.

Heyward-Bey was knocked unconscious and lay motionless on the field for several minutes Sunday. He was immobilized, placed on a cart and taken to a hospital. He was released Monday and is expected to fully recover. Munday was not flagged on the play by replacement refs.

“I didn’t go in there trying to hit him with my helmet,” Munday said. ”Things like that happen so fast. He may have come down to the level of my helmet. I have to see the replay, I don’t know.”

Raiders Coach Dennis Allen saw nothing dirty on the play. “It’s the game of football,” Allen said. “I don’t think people are trying to go out there and hurt people. The safety was playing the game fast and physical. It’s a tough game to play when you’re making split-second decisions on how you play the game. It’s the unfortunate things that happen in this game but we move on from it.”

On Tuesday, Denver Broncos linebacker Joe Mays was fined $50,000 and suspended one game for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub.
