Serena Williams withdraws from French Open

Serena Williams, who has not played tennis since last July, has withdrawn from the French Open.

Williams cut her foot shortly after winning Wimbledon, and underwent two foot operations. She then developed blood clots in her lung and was placed on blood thinners.

Williams was replaced in the main draw by Junri Namigata of Japan.

It remains unclear whether Williams’ sister, Venus, will be able to play in the French Open. She has not played since withdrawing from the Australian Open in January because of a hip injury. Earlier this week, she withdrew from the Brussels Open, a French warmup tournament.
