Super Bowl 2012 injury report: Giants’ Mark Herzlich is inactive; Patriots’ Rob Gronkowski, Chad Ochocinco are active

Rookie linebacker Mark Herzlich is among the seven players on the Giants’ inactive list for the game.

Herzlich’s story was among the most inspirational of this Super Bowl. He sat out the 2009 season at Boston College after being diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a form of bone cancer, but returned to play last season and signed with the Giants as an undrafted rookie last summer. He said during the week that he hoped to inspire others who are battling cancer.

Veteran running back Kevin Faulk is among the players on the Patriots’ inactive list.

Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, who suffered an ankle injury in the AFC title game, is active for the Super Bowl. So, too, is wide receiver Chad Ochocinco, who was on the inactive list for the AFC championship game, and defensive lineman Alex Silvestro, who was promoted from the practice squad to the 53-man roster Saturday.

Mark Maske covers the NFL for The Washington Post.
