Tim Tebow hears boos at Yankees game and a reminder from Rex Ryan that he’s the backup

Maybe it was his seat, next to Dwyane Wade hours after the Miami Heat beat the New York Knicks. Maybe it was the brand-spanking new Yankees cap. Maybe it was the Jockey billboard that has now appeared on the Upper West Side. Maybe it was the simple fact, that, until an athlete actually wins in New York, it can be a tough town.

Hence, Tim Tebow, the New York Jets’ new backup quarterback, heard boos and cheers in the Bronx on Sunday night as he watched the Yankees beat the Angels at the Stadium. (See the video here.)

“I said, ‘Wow, they put Tebow up [on the screen],’ ” reliever David Robertson said. “That was funny. I’m sure there were cheers and boos. They say this is Giants territory.”

Tebow was outta there by the seventh inning and ready to keep his promise to join his new team “at the crack of dawn” today, the first day of offseason conditioning. Two years ago, when he was at the Senior Bowl and Tony Sparano was head coach of the Miami Dolphins, Sparano gave Tebow a playbook. That has come in handy now that Sparano is the Jets’ offensive coordinator.

“I keep everything, and I've been going over every page of it,” Tebow told the New York Post on Saturday at his charity golf tournament in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. “I'm sure a lot of it still applies, even though that was a couple of years ago. I'm also excited to see what [Sparano] has new planned for me.”

At the moment, Sparano has more planned for Mark Sanchez. Jets Coach Rex Ryan reiterated the pecking order today.

“I mean, of course, Mark's the starter,” Ryan said. “There's no question about it. That's how we look at it. But ... Tim can help us, too.”
