The younger brother of Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith was killed this morning in a motorcycle crash in Northern Virginia.

Smith left the team hotel early this morning after learning of the death of his brother, Tevin, and returned to the team late this afternoon. He is expected to be available for the Ravens’ game tonight against the New England Patriots, although Coach John Harbaugh left the decision up to Smith and his family

Torrey Smith, who played at the University of Maryland, had a key role in helping his mother raise his siblings in Virginia and is especially close to them. This morning, he tweeted about the loss and posted a photo of his brother wearing a Ravens jersey:

Tevin, who lives in Fredericksburg, Va., was killed when his motorcycle struck a utility pole, the Baltimore Sun reported.

“We received a call at 11:58 p.m., and it turned out to be a fatality,” West Moreland County Sheriff C.O. Balderson told Aaron Wilson. “The young man was in a single-vehicle accident, just the motorcycle. Sheriff’s deputies responded as well as medical personnel and the state police. The state police are handling the accident.”

Tevin was wearing a safety helmet and alcohol is not a factor in the crash, which reemains under investigation.

“Torrey’s priority is his family,” Harbaugh said in a statement released by the team. “We understand that completely.

“This is devastatingly sad, sad news. Torrey and his family are a close, special family, and our hearts and thoughts reach out to all of them. Our hearts ache today. We pray for Tevin, his mother, Torrey and the rest of the family. God  bless Tevin.”
