New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes will undergo surgery for a Lisfranc injury to his left foot and will miss the rest of the regular season.

Coach Rex Ryan made the announcement this morning, confirming earlier reports that the team’s top offensive player would be placed on the injured-reserve list. Holmes suffered the midfoot injury on the first play of the fourth quarter of the Jets’ loss to the San Francisco 49ers, when he caught a pass an fell to the ground without being touched.

In anticipation of the news about Holmes and with only three healthy wide receivers on the roster, the Jets announced the signing of wide receiver Jason Hill this morning. Hill, playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars last season, called the Jets “overhyped” before the teams played one another — and the Jets won, 32-3.

Nine days ago, the Jets lost their best defensive player, Darrelle Revis, to a torn anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered on a non-contact play.
