A’s Pat Neshek joins playoff roster days after son’s death

October 5, 2012

Wednesday night as the Oakland Athletics were celebrating one of the most improbable AL West division titles ever, A’s reliever Pat Neshek and his wife Stephanee were mourning the death of their first son only 23 hours after his birth.

Friday the A’s announced their 32-year-old side-armer will be included on their postseason roster when they open their American League Division Series against on Saturday in Detroit..

Oakland manager Bob Melvin said he is excited that Neshek decided to join the team for the playoffs and he believes the A’s can support their teammate in his time of need (via the San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser).

Neshek left Oakland on Tuesday to be with Stephanee in Florida for the birth of Gehrig John Neshek. But about 23 hours after the couple tweeted the arrival of the 8-pound, 5-ounce baby boy, Neshek tweeted the heartbreaking news.

In 24 appearances this season, Neshek has a sterling 1.37 ERA with 16 strikeouts and six walks. He has allowed only 10 hits and three runs in 19 2/3 innings and provides Melvin with a valuable situational reliever to use against Detroit’s potent lineup.
